A Jubilee Lite Retreat
No, this is not some new dance, nor is it the opposite to the Charge of the Light Brigade. But it is a chance to spend the long Jubilee weekend away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Relaxing among Dorset’s beautiful countryside, enjoying meals together in the open air and chilling out with friends definitely provides much needed retreat.
And with so much uncertainty and hardship facing us in the current economic climate, this is a chance to put all that aside, to focus afresh on God and the refuge he offers, and discover how to offer that refuge in our own communities.
All this happens at Shechem Community’s annual weekend. Shechem is a group of Christians from various parts of England who come together at various times of the year, especially for an annual gathering at the Whitsun bank holiday weekend. Members are warmly invited to attend and please do ask your family and friends if they would like to join you to be part of the community over the weekend. There will be activities, worship and friendship to enjoy together.
The weekend takes place at Holton Lee, near Wareham in Dorset (see our map & directions). Holton Lee is a private estate on the edge of Poole Harbour. It specialises in enabling disabled people to enjoy the surrounding countryside. The site is secluded and much of the natural habitat of the estate is specially protected. Further information on Holton Lee can be found on its website.
Members of the community will lead our thinking during the weekend. The programme will not be intense but we will have more but shorter meetings than in previous years, a bit like a monastic cycle of prayer. This will allow us to come close to God and allow him to come close to us. As the Queen celebrates her diamond jubilee, we can rejoice with her and the King of Kings.
